The Basilica
A Place to Gather for All
The Notre-Dame Basilica of Montréal is a place of gathering where the faithful receive the Word of God through liturgy, the Eucharist and the celebration of the sacraments. The parish is responsible for faith education for all ages.
As a Canadian national historic site and a privileged witness to history dating back to Montréal’s founding, the Basilica showcases its history along with its architectural, religious and artistic heritage.
The Basilica guarantees its development and sustainability by managing its activities in such a way as to maintain financial integrity and meet its long-term obligations.
The Notre-Dame Basilica of Montréal, as well as Notre-Dame-des-Neiges Cemetery, falls under the responsibility of La Fabrique de la paroisse Notre-Dame de Montréal, a non-profit organization.
Since 1854, the Fabrique has owned and managed these two institutions, both great witnesses to Montréal’s history.
To fulfill this mission, the Basilica has a pastoral team dedicated to bearing witness to the faith and striking a balance between its tourist, cultural and religious activities.
The Basilica has set up a schedule so that its priests are available to the faithful who wish to confess, exchange or have religious objects blessed. The Basilica has also chosen the Notre-Dame-du-Sacré-Coeur chapel as a space for recollection, meditation and silence. To facilitate prayer, the Blessed Sacrament is on display from Monday to Friday, as well as on Sundays.
The pastoral care and administration teams strive to create a warm environment where everyone is welcomed with respect. Dedicated employees ensure that the premises are respected and that visitors and parishioners receive a warm welcome. The Basilica's aim is to accompany those who wish to learn about the faith, so that your wedding day is the most beautiful memory of your life, and your children's baptism is the celebration of a new life. A life received from God. The Basilica accompanies you in faith, respect and hope when you request a funeral for a loved one.
The Basilica manages its activities, both religious and tourist, in a spirit of openness to all, and in a spirit of solidarity with the most disadvantaged members of society. Everyone is encouraged to get involved in the community.
I bid you welcome to the Notre-Dame Basilica of Montréal.
This magnificent church, located in Old Montreal, is a powerful symbol of our metropolis and its history. It is the guardian of its mystical foundations. As well as being a must-see tourist attraction, Notre-Dame Basilica is a place of faith, spirituality, welcome and encounter with God. Its main mission is to proclaim the Gospel; that is its raison d'être.
We hope you enjoy your visit to the Notre-Dame Basilica.
